Moving to Costa Rica from Alberta: A 2026 Relocation Guide

·9 min read

Albertans are no strangers to long, cold winters — and each year more of them swap the prairie deep freeze for Costa Rica's warmth and pura vida pace. Here is your 2026 relocation guide.

Getting There: Calgary to Costa Rica

Calgary (YYC) offers seasonal nonstop flights to Liberia (LIR) and San José (SJO) on WestJet (roughly 6.5 hours), plus year-round one-stop options; Edmonton (YEG) connects through Calgary or US hubs. Costa Rica is in the Central time zone — one hour ahead of Alberta's Mountain time — so there is almost no jet lag.

Escaping the Alberta Cold

Deep-freeze winters and high heating bills push many Albertans south. Costa Rica's Central Valley enjoys spring-like 70s–80s°F year-round with warm coasts and no heating costs. See our weather and climate guide and snowbirds guide.

Costa Rica does not tax foreign income, so your CPP, OAS, and private pensions are not taxed locally. See our Canadian retirees guide.

Choosing Your Residency Path

  • Pensionado — US$1,000/month pension; CPP/OAS and private pensions can qualify. Details.
  • Rentista — US$2,500/month or a US$60,000 deposit.
  • Inversionista — US$150,000+ investment.
  • Vínculo — family ties to a Costa Rican citizen.

Compare Pensionado vs Rentista.

Your Alberta Documents Checklist

  • Certificate of conduct — an RCMP criminal record check (fingerprint-based).
  • Birth certificate — from Alberta Vital Statistics (via a registry agent).
  • Marriage certificate if applicable.
  • Valid passport (12+ months validity).
  • Proof of income or investment.

With Canada now in the Hague Apostille Convention (since January 2024), documents receive an apostille. Federal documents (the RCMP check) are apostilled by Global Affairs Canada; Alberta documents are apostilled by the province's competent authority. All are then translated to Spanish, must be issued within 6 months, and filed together. See our apostille guide.

Where Albertans Settle

  • Central Valley (Atenas, Grecia, Escazú) — mild climate and established expat communities. See living in Atenas.
  • Guanacaste — sunny Pacific beaches with seasonal direct flights from Calgary. See living in Guanacaste.

Timeline and Next Steps

Residency currently takes about 9–10 months based on Immigration's backlog, with permanent residency after 36 months. Many Albertans start as snowbirds, then transition to full residency with our team.

The Bottom Line

Seasonal direct flights from Calgary, minimal time change, no heating bills, and no Costa Rican tax on your pension — Costa Rica is a natural escape for Albertans.
