Costa Rica Pensionado Visa Income Requirements Explained (2026)

·8 min read

The Pensionado is Costa Rica's most popular residency route for retirees — and the question we are asked more than any other is: "Do I have enough income to qualify?" The threshold is refreshingly attainable, but the details of what counts and how to prove it matter. Here is everything you need to know for 2026.

The Headline Number: $1,000 Per Month

To qualify for the Pensionado (Retiree) residency, you must prove a guaranteed lifetime pension income of at least $1,000 USD per month. That figure has two important features:

1. It covers the whole family. A single $1,000/month pension can include your spouse and dependent children on your application — you do *not* need $1,000 per person. 2. It must be guaranteed for life. The income has to come from a permanent, lifelong source — which is why pensions qualify and ordinary savings do not.

What Income Actually Counts

Qualifying sources include:

  • US Social Security retirement benefits
  • Government pensions (military, federal, state, civil service)
  • Private/corporate pensions that pay for life
  • Defined-benefit pension plans from a former employer
  • Equivalent national pensions from the UK, Canada, and other countries

What generally does not count for the Pensionado:

  • Rental income, dividends, or investment withdrawals (these point you toward the Rentista instead)
  • A lump sum in a bank account (again, that is the Rentista or Inversionista path)
  • 401(k) or IRA balances that are not paid as a guaranteed lifetime annuity

If your income comes from savings or investments rather than a lifelong pension, the Rentista visa (requiring $2,500/month or a $60,000 deposit) is usually the right fit.

How You Prove It

You will need an official letter from the paying institution confirming the monthly amount and that it is payable for life. For:

  • US Social Security: a benefits verification letter from the SSA.
  • Private pensions: a letter from the plan administrator.
  • Other countries: an official statement from the national pension authority or provider.

This letter must be apostilled and translated to Spanish, and — like all residency documents — it needs to be recent when you file (within the 6-month window). See our document checklist.

Do You Have to Transfer the Money to Costa Rica?

A common requirement is to show that the pension income is actually being received — historically applicants have had to demonstrate the monthly exchange of the required amount into colones through the Costa Rican banking system once residency is granted. Our team confirms the current procedure for your case so there are no surprises at renewal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it matter if I earn far more than $1,000/month? No — $1,000 is the minimum. Earning more does not speed up or change the process; you simply need to clear the threshold.

Can my spouse use my pension to qualify? Yes. Spouses and dependents are included under your qualifying income.

What if I have $900/month? You would not meet the Pensionado minimum, but you may qualify under the Rentista route, or by combining sources. Talk to us — there is often a path.

Is the $1,000 ever going to change? The figure has been stable, but immigration thresholds can be updated. We always work from the current requirement at the time you file.

The Benefits Behind the Requirement

Meeting that $1,000 threshold unlocks a lot: temporary residency, access to the CAJA public healthcare system, the right to own and run a business, zero Costa Rican tax on your foreign income, a presence requirement of just once per 24 months, and a path to permanent residency after 36 months.
