What Is an Apostille?
An apostille is a certificate that authenticates a document for international use. It's recognized by all countries that are members of the Hague Convention (including Costa Rica and the United States, Canada, UK, and most of Europe).
Which Documents Need Apostilling?
For Costa Rica residency, you'll typically need to apostille:
- Birth certificate
- Certificate of conduct from FBI (for US citizens)
- Police clearance from your home country (non-US)
- Marriage certificate (if applying with spouse or through family ties)
- Pension verification letter (for Pensionado applicants)
- Bank statements (for Rentista applicants)
Where to Get an Apostille (US Citizens)
For federal documents (FBI certificate of conduct): - US Department of State, Office of Authentications - Processing time: 4–6 weeks (standard) or 2–3 weeks (expedited)
For state documents (birth certificate, marriage certificate): - Secretary of State office in the state that issued the document - Processing time varies by state (1 day to 4 weeks)
For Canadian Citizens
Canada is not part of the Hague Convention, so you need authentication and legalization instead: - Global Affairs Canada authenticates the document - Then the Costa Rican embassy or consulate legalizes it - Processing time: 2–4 weeks
For UK Citizens
- FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) handles apostilles
- Can be done online or by post
- Processing time: 1–2 weeks
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Getting the apostille on a copy instead of the original — Costa Rica requires apostilled originals 2. Expired documents — FBI certificates are valid for 6 months; don't apostille too early 3. Wrong state — Birth certificates must be apostilled by the state that issued them 4. Forgetting translation — After apostilling, documents must be officially translated to Spanish by a certified Costa Rican translator
