The Hard Truth About the Digital Nomad Visa
The Digital Nomad Visa lets qualifying remote workers (generally $3,000/month income, or $4,000 for families) live in Costa Rica for one year, renewable for a second — with a tax exemption on foreign income and other perks. It is fantastic for a two-year adventure.
But here is the catch: it does not convert into permanent residency, and the time does not count toward it. When your two years are up, you must either leave or apply under a completely separate residency category. The good news is that switching is entirely possible — and you can often apply while still in the country.
The Real Pathways to Permanent Residency
If you want to stay long term, you will move onto one of Costa Rica's standard residency tracks. For most digital nomads, these are the realistic options:
Rentista — the most common choice. Designed for people with stable income who aren't traditional retirees. You qualify with $2,500/month of guaranteed income for two years, or a $60,000 deposit in a Costa Rican bank disbursed over 24 months. Since many nomads already earn above the Digital Nomad Visa's $3,000/month threshold, the Rentista income bar is very achievable. It leads to permanent residency after 36 months.
Inversionista (Investor). If you are ready to put down roots financially, a $150,000+ investment in property, a business, or approved sectors qualifies you — and buying a home you would live in anyway can double as your investment. Also leads to permanent residency after 36 months.
Vínculo or Marriage. If you have a family tie to a Costa Rican, or you marry one, faster paths open up — marriage to a citizen is the quickest route of all.

Why the Rentista Fits Most Remote Workers
For a location-independent professional, the Rentista is usually the natural next step:
- Your existing remote income often already meets the $2,500/month requirement.
- It grants CAJA healthcare access — a big upgrade over the private-insurance-only nomad status.
- It builds toward permanent residency (36 months) and eventually citizenship (7 years) — every month finally counts.
- You only need to visit once per 24-month period to maintain status once granted.
A Smart Timeline
Do not wait until your Digital Nomad Visa expires. Because residency processing currently runs 9–10 months due to the Immigration backlog, the savvy move is to start your Rentista or Investor application while you are still legally in the country on your nomad status. That way your legal presence is continuous and you avoid a scramble at the deadline.
