Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa: Everything You Need to Know in 2026

·8 min read

Costa Rica launched its Digital Nomad Visa in 2021, making it one of the first countries in Latin America to offer a dedicated program for remote workers. Here's everything you need to know about it in 2026.

What Is the Digital Nomad Visa?

It's a special visa that allows foreign remote workers to live in Costa Rica for up to one year, renewable for a second year. You work remotely for a foreign employer or your own foreign-registered company while enjoying life in paradise.

Requirements

  • Income: Minimum $3,000 USD/month (or $5,000/month for families)
  • Employment: Must work remotely for a company outside Costa Rica or own a foreign business
  • Insurance: Must have health insurance covering your stay in Costa Rica
  • No local employment: Cannot work for a Costa Rican employer

Application Process

1. Complete the online application at the DGME (Costa Rica Immigration) portal 2. Submit proof of income (bank statements, employment letter, or business revenue) 3. Provide health insurance documentation 4. Pay the application fee (approximately $100) 5. Processing typically takes 2–3 weeks

Benefits

  • Tax-free foreign income
  • Open local bank accounts
  • Valid driver's license conversion
  • No minimum stay requirement within the visa period

The Catch: Maximum 2 Years

The biggest limitation is the 2-year maximum stay. After that, you must leave. Many digital nomads who fall in love with Costa Rica — and this happens more often than you'd think — end up switching to a Rentista or Pensionado visa for permanent residency.

Why Many Nomads Switch to Residency

As one of our clients, Sarah K., discovered: "I was considering becoming a digital nomad but soon realized I had become attached to Costa Rica and switched to Rentista Status. After consultation with Legal Residency Costa Rica, I now have a legal status here and not a visa."

The Rentista visa offers: - Permanent path to residency (not time-limited) - Access to CAJA healthcare - Duty-free import benefits under Law #9996 - Path to permanent residency after 36 months
