How to Get Permanent Residency in Costa Rica After 36 Months

·7 min read

After 36 months of temporary residency in Costa Rica, you can apply for permanent residency. This is a significant upgrade with important benefits. Here's everything you need to know.

What Changes with Permanent Residency?

The biggest change: you can work as an employee in Costa Rica's local labor force.

With temporary residency (Pensionado, Rentista, Investor), you have all the rights of a Costa Rican citizen except: - Voting - Taking a job from a Costa Rican citizen

With permanent residency, you gain the right to work as an employee. You still cannot vote — that requires citizenship.

Requirements to Upgrade

1. 36 months of continuous temporary residency — Your DIMEX must have been valid and current for at least 3 years 2. Presence in Costa Rica — You must have visited at least once during each 24-month period 3. Current DIMEX card — Your temporary residency card must not have lapsed 4. CAJA enrollment — Must be current on healthcare payments 5. Updated certificate of conduct — A fresh FBI certificate (or equivalent) may be required 6. Application fee — Government filing fees apply

The Process

1. Gather updated documents — Certificate of conduct, proof of CAJA enrollment, DIMEX card copies 2. File the application — Through Immigration (DGME) 3. Processing time — Varies based on Immigration backlog 4. Approval — Receive permanent residency status 5. New DIMEX card — Updated card reflecting permanent status

After Permanent Residency: Citizenship

Once you've had legal residency for 7 years total (including your temporary period), you can apply for Costa Rican citizenship through naturalization.

Citizenship requirements: - 7 years of legal residency (5 years for spouses of Costa Ricans) - Basic Spanish language test - Knowledge of Costa Rican history and values - Clean record

Benefits of citizenship: - Full voting rights - Costa Rican passport - No renewal requirements - Dual citizenship is allowed — you don't give up your original nationality

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Letting your DIMEX lapse — If your card expires, your residency status may be affected. Renew before the 24-month period lapses. 2. Not visiting Costa Rica — Remember, you must be present at least once per 24-month period. 3. Falling behind on CAJA — Keep your payments current. 4. Not keeping records — Save all your immigration documents, receipts, and correspondence.
