Getting approved for Costa Rican residency is a major milestone — but it's not a one-and-done process. Your DIMEX (Documento de Identidad Migratorio para Extranjeros) must be renewed every 24 months.
The 24-Month Renewal Cycle
Start the renewal process 3–4 months before your expiration date. The renewal involves:
1. Confirming continued eligibility 2. Gathering updated documentation 3. Ensuring CAJA payments are current 4. Filing with Immigration (DGME) 5. Biometrics appointment 6. Receiving updated DIMEX
Physical Presence Requirement
You must physically visit Costa Rica at least once within each 24-month period. Any length of stay counts — even a weekend. Passport stamps serve as the official record. Failing to visit is treated as voluntary abandonment.
CAJA: Must Be Current
All residents must maintain current CAJA premium payments (~$100/month per person). Immigration requires proof of no outstanding CAJA debt at renewal time.
Documents Required
All categories: - Current DIMEX card (original) - Valid passport (12+ months recommended) - CAJA payment certification - Proof of physical presence (passport stamps) - Current passport photos
Pensionado addition: Updated pension verification letter (within 6 months)
Rentista addition: Bank certification confirming deposit structure remains in place
Investor addition: Proof of continued investment ($150,000 minimum still active)
What If You Miss the Deadline?
After expiration without a pending renewal: - You are in irregular immigration status - Subject to fines - Reentry may be complicated - May need to restart the entire process
Don't let it lapse. Set a reminder 4 months before expiration.
The 36-Month Upgrade: Permanent Residency
After 36 months of temporary residency, you qualify for permanent residency:
| Feature | Temporary | Permanent |
|---|---|---|
| Validity | 24 months (renewable) | Indefinite |
| Work authorization | Limited | Full — any employment |
| Income requirement | Must maintain | No longer required |
| Path to citizenship | Through permanent first | Eligible after 5 years |
