Most people focus on income-based pathways — Pensionado, Rentista, or Investor. But there is a category that requires no minimum income, grants full work authorization from day one, and creates the shortest path to citizenship: the Vínculo (Family Ties) visa.
Who Qualifies
First-degree relatives of Costa Rican citizens:
- Spouses — legally married to a Costa Rican citizen
- Minor children — under 18, child of a Costa Rican citizen
- Parents — of a Costa Rican citizen (including parents of a child born in Costa Rica)
Any child born on Costa Rican soil is automatically a citizen by birth. If your child was born here, you qualify as a parent of a Costa Rican citizen.
Key Benefits
Full Work Authorization Unlike Pensionado or Rentista (which restrict employment), **Vínculo residents can work for any employer, run a business, or be self-employed** from day one.
No Income Threshold No pension, no bank deposit, no investment required. The family relationship is the qualifying factor.
Path to Citizenship in 5 Years Spouses of Costa Rican citizens can apply for citizenship after just **5 years of legal residency** — shorter than the standard 7-year timeline.
Law #9996 Duty-Free Benefits Same vehicle and household goods import benefits as other categories. July 2026 deadline applies.
Document Requirements
From the foreign applicant: - Valid passport (12+ months validity recommended) - Birth certificate (apostilled) - Identity History Summary from the FBI (US) or equivalent (apostilled) - Marriage certificate (apostilled) — for marriage-based applications - Passport photos and proof of Costa Rican address
From the Costa Rican citizen spouse: - Costa Rican cédula (national ID) - Costa Rican birth certificate - Evidence of genuine marriage (photos, shared address, correspondence)
For parent-of-citizen-child applications: - Child's Costa Rican birth certificate - Your name on the child's birth certificate
All documents: Issued within 6 months, submitted as a complete package. No partial applications accepted.
Common Questions
Is there a minimum marriage duration? No, but evidence of a genuine relationship is standard.
What about common-law marriage? Costa Rica recognizes registered common-law unions (uniones de hecho), which may support a Vínculo application.
What if we divorce? A divorce after DIMEX issuance does not automatically revoke residency, but may affect renewal.
Can my other children get residency too? Yes — minor children can apply for derivative residency based on the parent's status.
Why Vínculo Is Underutilized
Many qualifying families don't realize this is their best option. They assume they need income proof or an investment. If you're married to a Costa Rican or have a Costa Rican-born child, you have a no-income, full-work-authorization, accelerated-citizenship pathway available.
