Opening a Bank Account in Costa Rica as an Expat: 2026 Guide

·9 min read

Banking is one of the most practical aspects of relocating to Costa Rica. A local bank account is functionally required for Rentista visa deposits, CAJA payments, utilities, and daily transactions via SINPE Móvil (Costa Rica's instant payment system).

Public vs. Private Banks

State-owned (Banco Nacional, BCR): Government-backed, broadest ATM network, but more rigorous KYC documentation for foreigners.

Private (BAC Credomatic, Scotiabank, Promerica): More expat-friendly, English-speaking staff, faster account opening.

Recommendation: Start with a private bank (BAC or Promerica), add a public bank later.

Documents Required

  • Valid passport (12+ months validity)
  • DIMEX card (temporary or permanent residency)
  • Proof of Costa Rican address (utility bill or lease, dated within 3 months)
  • Proof of income/funds source (pension letter, tax returns, bank statements — 3–6 months)
  • Completed bank application forms

USD vs. Colones Accounts

Open both:

  • USD account: Receiving wire transfers, holding savings, large purchases
  • Colones account: Daily expenses, CAJA, utilities, SINPE Móvil (only works with colones)

International Wire Transfers

You'll need: bank SWIFT code, your IBAN, bank name/address, your name as on account. US banks charge $20–$45 per outgoing wire. Wise (TransferWise) often offers better rates for smaller amounts.

First transfers over $10,000 trigger compliance documentation requests — have source-of-funds docs ready.

FATCA for US Citizens

  • Disclose US citizenship when opening the account
  • Sign W-9 form
  • File FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) if foreign accounts exceed $10,000
  • File FATCA Form 8938 if accounts exceed $200,000

Standard compliance — not a deterrent.

Tips for Getting Approved

1. Have your DIMEX first — tourist visa won't work 2. Go to the right branch — Santa Ana, Escazú, or San José financial district 3. Bring originals and copies — at least 3 copies of everything 4. Start with a private bank — BAC or Promerica are most accommodating 5. Be patient — account approval may take 1–3 weeks
